Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels down to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
