Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.
Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the ability to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
